From Exhausted to Empowered: One Healthcare Leader’s Journey

My client Amy called me feeling frustrated. Her front desk staff called out, again, and she had to scramble to find a replacement. The kicker? She wasn't a front desk supervisor, she was the Administrator of the Oncology department. She was responsible for the operations, budgets, on-call schedules, system-level projects, physician compensation, hiring, firing…the whole shebang.
She was basically the CEO of the department.
And yet her days were filled with fighting fires and left nothing in the tank to think and act strategically.
Sound familiar?
Amy wanted to quit. She was burnt out, tired, stressed, and felt like she was missing spending time with her kids.
But she was also deeply rooted in the mission and vision of her organization. She knew the impact her work had on real patients that were battling real life threatening diseases.
So we started to put together a plan to get her out of fire fighting mode and into intentional time mode.
We implemented The Defined Leader method, a mix of practical skills, mindset, and energy tools that allowed her to shift from reactive to proactive.
Not all the time (after all, call outs still happen, The Joint Commission will still come).
But MORE of the time.
Amy was able to find real tangible blocks of time to focus on true needle moving activity (like re-structuring her team, so that she could promote a trusted team member to a Front Desk Supervisor role AND so that she didn't get the 5am call-out calls).
After just 3 months of working together, Amy didn't dream of quitting anymore.
After 6 months of working together, Amy got a promotion to a system level role that allowed her to use her big picture thinking and her project management skills to much better use.
She was also able to pick up her kids from school a little more often, be the mystery reader in their classroom, and do bedtime without worrying about what’s happening in her Teams messages.
A win, win, win.
Amy didn't transform. She was already an incredible leader. Using The Defined Leader Method, she was able to use her skills to become happier, more confident, and more effective in all her roles.
